Deadly Roadside Blast in Colombia Kills Twelve People on Major Highway
The blast occurred in the El Tunel area of Cajibio in the Cauca region, tearing through a key transport route and leaving a large crater in the roadway. Debris from the explosion was scattered across the highway, and multiple vehicles were heavily damaged.
Footage from the scene showed a bus destroyed by the blast, with its engine reportedly thrown into another nearby vehicle due to the force of the explosion.
Initial reports placed the death toll at seven, with at least 17 injured, but later updates indicated that several of the wounded died from their injuries, raising the total fatalities to 12. Most of the victims were reported to be civilians, including Indigenous passengers traveling on the bus.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro attributed the attack to dissident groups linked to the former FARC guerrilla organization operating under the command of Ivan Mordisco. He described those responsible as “terrorists, fascists and drug traffickers,” and called for international efforts to pursue the perpetrators, referring to them as part of a broader narcoterrorist network.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident as security operations in the region intensify.
