U.S. Moves Forward with Plans to Reopen Embassy in Caracas
"As President Trump said, we are making preparations to allow for a reopening should the President make that decision," the official confirmed, requesting anonymity.
However, deliberations remain in early phases, with no conclusive determination yet reached regarding the embassy's restoration.
When pressed by journalists aboard Air Force One on Sunday about potential plans to restore the Caracas mission, Trump responded: "We're thinking about it."
Washington shuttered its Venezuelan diplomatic post in 2019 when the Trump administration threw its support behind opposition figure Juan Guaido, whom it recognized as the legitimate president while dismissing Maduro's 2018 electoral victory as fraudulent.
Following the closure, US diplomatic functions in Venezuela were transferred to the embassy in adjacent Colombia.
The diplomatic developments follow a nighttime US military operation that extracted Maduro from Caracas over the weekend. The seized leader was subsequently transported to New York, where he and his spouse, Cilia Flores, entered not guilty pleas Monday to charges encompassing gun and drug trafficking violations.
