Trump administration prepares to reopen US embassy in Caracas

(MENAFN) The Trump administration is reportedly making preparations to reopen its embassy in Caracas, a senior State Department official told a news outlet on Monday.

“As President Trump said, we are making preparations to allow for a reopening should the President make that decision,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Planning remains in preliminary stages, and no final decision has yet been made.

When asked about reopening the embassy, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, “We’re thinking about it.”

The US embassy in Venezuela was closed in 2019 after Trump recognized opposition lawmaker Juan Guaidó as president, rejecting Nicolás Maduro’s 2018 reelection as illegitimate. Since then, US diplomatic responsibilities in Venezuela have been managed through the embassy in neighboring Colombia.

The potential reopening follows a recent US military operation that captured President Maduro over the weekend in Caracas, resulting in his transfer to New York, where he and his wife, Cilia Flores, pled not guilty Monday to charges related to gun and drug trafficking.
